Alice Springs Inland Dragway |
1/4 mile drag strip located in Central Australia run by volunteers from the Central Australian Drag Racing Association (CADRA).
Alice Springs Inland Dragway (ASID) was built by local volunteers and businesses and opened in August, 2008. It is located next to the Stuart Highway, 15 km south of Alice Springs, alongside the Finke Desert Race start line. ASID is operated by the Central Australian Drag Racing Association Inc. (CADRA) and is affiliated with the Australian National Drag Racing Association (ANDRA).
Before ASID, CADRA drag raced on a temporary track set up on a runway at the Alice Springs Airport. For 13 years, CADRA volunteers and the public petitioned the NT Government for assistance to build a permanent strip. An $850,000 NT Government grant was finally secured but not enough to build a 1/4 mile drag strip. The strip was made possible by racers, businesses and private donations of cash, materials and labour.
ASID has a standard 1/4 mile long (400 Metre) racing surface followed by 1 mile of braking area. The barrier walls now extend to the entire length of the strip. The spectator hill and viewing areas stop at the end of the 1/8 mile. Quarter mile races are held during day and night with permanent LED lighting.
CADRA would like to thank the Northern Territory Government and MotorSports NT for their ongoing support of such events as the Desert Nationals (which is always held in July), the NT Titles and the Red CentreNATS which in turn supports our club and the township of Alice Springs as a whole.
The funding for safety upgrades at the Alice Springs Inland Dragway has made our facility the benchmark for burnout pads nationally. These upgrades will enhance the safety of all drag racing and burnout comp spectators at every event hosted at ASID.
